November 1291. Meg and Llywelyn gather their family at Rhuddlan Castle to celebrate their seventh anniversary and David's 23rd birthday. But the joyful reunion goes grievously awry when an old enemy raises the banner of rebellion, followed immediately by an even more catastrophic betrayal by an old friend.

Meanwhile, facing war at every turn and still haunted by his decision to leave Cassie and Callum in the modern world, David chooses a dangerous path forward, one that will either change the course of the future forever or burn his world to ashes.

Ashes of Time is book seven in the After Cilmeri series.

I'm still enjoying these books but there are a few things I wish could be better. The first is the amount of historical info dump. I understand there's a fine line between background information, information the author needs to know but doesn't need to impart with the reader, and info dump. In this, there's a bit too much of the latter.

Now I like history, even have a degree in the subject with a focus on England in the high Middle Ages. So this period is right up your alley. But when I start skimming it's a problem.

I will say Cassie is much improved over her previous appearances. And I really did not see the ending coming. That being said, I wish more time was spent with these characters considering the later books.

Ashes of Time The After Cilmeri Series Book 7 (Audible Audio Edition) Sarah Woodbury Laurel Schroeder Books Reviews

This volume is action-packed and works well on the dual planes of the 13th and 21st centuries. Once again a life-threatening situation sends members of the family - this time David's mom, Meg, and sister, Anna, hurtling into the 21st century. Meanwhile, in the 13th century David, as king of England is getting ready to help his dad, Llewellyn, King of Wales, go into battle to defend Welsh territory from yet another interloper.
Both streams move forward and both build from mild but interesting to nail-biting tension, resolved in a manner that while not exactly new, promises to offer plenty of material (in both time frames) for further novels. While the ending is not a cliffhanger, it does point towards a qualitative shift in the underlying story.
I would not be at all surprised to discover that this author is a time-traveler and has ventured between this world and medieval Wales many times. Although I am not a history buff (nor a native of medieval Wales), her books are so full of detail that you feel as if you are actually experiencing it right along with them.

Up until this book, the stories have had a bit of romance in them, but they are primarily time-travel/medieval history/action-adventure books. That being said, I read the first book because it was presented as a romance, which is my favorite genre. I was not disappointed and have read each of them, loving them all. My only disappointment is that the series is coming to an end soon, but really, isn't that why a person keeps reading all of the books in a series, to see how it all turns out?
A wonderful edition to a great series! I enjoyed seeing Meg and Cassie going back to the future and the consequences of it. Seeing Llwelyn, Math and David in particular, coping with the loss of the ladies. Though he had been through it before, Llwelyn seemed a little lost without Meg. And Callum and Cassie are back!! Yay! Love Callum!!

I think my favorite line in the whole book was, "Llwelyn laughed. 'I prayed my whole life that such fate would be mine,'" when talking about their massive brood gathered together. I can see how this would be so true for him. A man in desperate need of an heir, that didn't have a child until late in life (especially for the Middle Ages) and then the mother and child disappear for years. Yay, I can see where he would have thought he'd die without family and be grateful for what he has now.
Having stumbled upon the first book in the series only to devour all of Ms. Woodbury's books way too quickly, I was awaiting this installment with excitement. Happy to say it was better than some of the last few in the series, offered interesting new twists and directions for the cast, and left me ready and waiting for more. If I have one criticism it is that there were many, many central and supporting characters to keep track of by the last quarter of the story. I'd love a crib sheet of the cast at the front of the books like some other authors with a large cast of characters will provide. All in all, an entertaining read and an exciting alternate history that continues to unfold in ways I enjoy. Keep 'em coming, Ms. Woodbury!
Ashes of Time continues the saga of Llywelyn, Meg, Anna and David. Everyone but Cassie and Callam are at Rhuddlan Castle in Wales to celebrate David's 23rd birthday. They are expecting the pilot of the plane Meg was traveling in when she came back to Llywelyn. The pilot had made his home in Scotland with a wife and baby on the way, but suddenly asks to visit after turning down other offers. He forces Anna and Meg up to the roof of the castle where he wants them to jump, but in the fall he lets go and ends up at the base of the castle while Meg and Anna end up in Oregon close to Cassie's relatives. It is Thanksgiving night and The Project is being shut down, Cassie fired and Callam transferred back to MI-5. They hope that with the bombings by ELF, everyone will be too busy to pay attention here and back in Wales. The shadow organization has rebranded itself and is alive and well and hunting the four. Cassie and Callam have a plane ready to go back to Wales and they only need to get Anna and Meg there. The Black Friday sale is priceless and Meg gets a pair of glasses. They stock up on the items David had made a list of that everyone was to carry in case they went back. Chocolate and Coffee were a no go, but they bought tons of tomato seeds and lots of potatoes to let sprout and cut up for planting. Now they have to take buses, rental cars and planes to get to the safe house Callam has with bags already packed and ready.

There is a bomber loose and buildings blowing up. MI-5 is trying to trick them into coming in and they only have minutes to meet up with the computer whiz printing out their plans and find a way back. Will Anna and Meg make it back with Cassie and Callam or will they be separated like last time? Will the shadow organization or the terrorist bombs get them? After Cilmeri always delivers. The action is fast paced, the characters are rich and like old friends. The story is told from several POV's, but they are always identified and the story benefits from their different outlooks. I really enjoy this series, because I love history. When Ms. Woodbury deviates from history, she starts at a jumping off point that is real history and makes a logical supposition based on the characters and how they would react. It makes for a believable story, a family epic and a wonderful "what if"?
I'm still enjoying these books but there are a few things I wish could be better. The first is the amount of historical info dump.
